Robert De La Vina our school’s namesake was born in Edinburg, Texas on April 9, 1914. He attended Elementary, Junior High, and High School in Edinburg. He graduated from Edinburg High School in 1933.

 

After graduating from high school, he continued his studies at Edinburg Junior College where he graduated in 1935. In 1937, he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Texas A&I College. He began his teaching career with the Edinburg School District in 1937.


After teaching for five years, his teaching career was interrupted by World War II. He entered the services and was assigned to the Army Air Force. After a distinguished army service, he was given an honorable discharge on February 16, 1946.
After returning from the war, he continued his teaching career. While they were both teachers in the Edinburg School District, he met and married Miss Grace Watkins from Lubbock, Texas. They spent 39 wonderful years of marriage together.


Later in Mr. De La Vina's educational career, he was assigned as an administrator at the Junior High School and then as a central office Director of Special Services. He retired after 37 years of service but continued to help the school district by serving as an ECISD School Board Member for an additional 6 years. Mr. De La Vina along with all of the De La Vina family was honored by the naming of an elementary school "De La Vina Elementary" in honor of the numerous years which they dedicated to education.
